Dermal Fillers & Wrinkle Relaxing Injections

Dermal Fillers

For many people, the younger they look, the better they feel about themselves. But age is an unstoppable process and, as the body grows older so does the skin and, consequently, its appearance and characteristics change.

Age, hormones sun exposure and smoking all have a part to play, causing fine lines and wrinkles to develop. The skin feels more fragile and less elastic. Plus, the hyaluronic acid in our skin decreases and this is essential for water retention. The skin also loses fat, so it looks less plump and smooth.

Dermal fillers are non-surgical cosmetic treatments used to bring a more youthful appearance by restoring volume and fullness to the face and lips. They work by reducing or eliminating lines, wrinkles and folds in the skin and the effect is seen immediately after treatment.

What are dermal fillers made of?
Various kinds of safe, natural and man-made materials are used as dermal fillers; these have been specifically developed over the years for use in the skin. Hylauronic Acid products are a range of smooth consistency gels which is injected to restore volume fill fine lines, wrinkles and folds and redefine lips. Hylauronic Acid products are special because they do not use granular like fillers, and this results in smoother more natural looking results.

How are fillers applied?
Dermal fillers are applied in a pre-sterile syringe for injection. They are manufactured in varying thicknesses - some are more gel-like others are more liquid. The thicker ones are used to restore deeper folds in the skin such as those near the nose and corner of the mouth.

Is the treatment uncomfortable?
A local anaesthetic cream is used to make treatment as comfortable as possible. For treatments near the mouth, we may freeze the area with an injection which is similar to a dental anaesthetic. The smooth consistency of the Hylauronic Acid product allows your medical practitioner to administer it easily and smoothly. It also contains 0.3% lidocaine to reduce injection pain for a more comfortable experience.

After the treatment we will supply you with aftercare instructions to maximise benefit.

How long will the effects last?
This depends on a number of factors including:

  • Age
  • The area you have had treated
  • Quantity of Hylauronic Acid injected
  • Quality of skin
  • Lifestyle
  • Healthiness

However, the Hylauronic Acid product we use are the only line of dermal fillers which are proven to last up to on year in nose to mouth lines.

How long is an appointment?
The injection process takes a mere 15-30 minutes, you'll also need to allow time to discuss what you are hoping to achieve with Elliott McCarthy before treatment.

Will I notice the difference right away?
Yes, the aesthetic results are immediate. You'll see the results as soon as your appointment is over - and no one else needs to know!

Wrinkle Relaxing Injections

Another option for reducing wrinkles and facial lines which result from the natural effects of ageing, muscle activity, genetic predisposition, excessive sun exposure, alcohol consumption and smoking is to have wrinkle relaxing injections.

This treatment can be most effective at improving facial lines or wrinkles due to facial expressions e.g. worry lines, frown lines on the forehead or between the eyebrows. This is because these lines are usually caused by an overactive muscle and the injection treatment stops the muscle from contracting and causing wrinkles.

How long does the treatment take?
In most cases the treatment will take between 10 to 20 minutes. Effects will begin to appear very quickly within 48 to 72 hours, although the full extent of the treatment may not be visible for up to 10 days. Approximately 2 weeks after your treatment, the effects will be reviewed by Elliott McCarthy and any further treatments or top-ups can be discussed.

Treatment Areas
Vertical lines between the eyebrows and on the bridge of the nose

  • Vertical lines between the eyebrows and on the bridge of the nose
  • Squint lines at the corners of the eyes
  • Horizontal lines on the forehead (frownlines)

Is the treatment uncomfortable?
Very small needles are used and only small amounts are administered. As a result any discomfort is usually minimal and short-lived, that's why there is no need for local anaesthetic.

Do the effects of this treatment look artificial?
No, unlike some surgical facelifts, this kind of treatment is very specific and works only on those muscles that are involved in producing the facial lines that you want to reduce. Other muscles are unaffected and this means that your usual facial expressions remain the same.

Are there any side effects?
Side effects are generally minimal, temporary, and typically relate to the local injection. Soreness or mild bruising, while uncommon, may occur around the injection site. Makeup may be applied after the treatment, but care should be taken to avoid pressing or massaging the area for several hours. A temporary headache is not uncommon after injections in the forehead area, especially after the first treatment. In rare instances, patients may develop weakness of the neighbouring muscles leading to a temporary droopy brow or eyelid. All of these possible effects are mild, reversible, and self-limiting.
